Industrial sentiment remains firmly below neutral and weaker than a year earlier
Recent dynamics
Business confidence was still above the neutral threshold during much of 2024. The index stood at 53.2 points in the first quarter, eased to 51.5 in the second, moved close to neutrality at 50.1 in the third, and recovered to 53.2 in the fourth quarter.
The picture weakened materially in 2025. Confidence fell below 50 points in the first quarter and remained there throughout the year, declining from 49.1 to 47.2 by the fourth quarter.
The deterioration continued in 2026. The index rose briefly to 48.5 in the first quarter, then fell to 45.2 in the second and 44.4 in the third quarter. Compared with the third quarter of 2025, the latest reading is 2.9 points lower.
Interpretation and economic signal
The index ranges from 0 to 100 points, with 50 marking the dividing line between confidence and lack of confidence. Readings below 50 therefore indicate that industrial entrepreneurs are, on balance, pessimistic about current conditions and expectations.
At 44.4 points, the latest reading is materially below neutral and confirms that weak sentiment has become persistent rather than temporary. The decline through 2026 also suggests that firms have become more cautious about the operating environment.
Business confidence matters because expectations can influence investment, hiring, production plans, and purchases of inputs. Persistent weakness can therefore act as a headwind to future industrial activity even before it becomes visible in hard economic data.
Conclusion
Brazil's industrial business confidence remains weak and has deteriorated further over the past year. The latest quarterly reading is well below the neutral threshold and below the level recorded in the same quarter of 2025.
The current signal is therefore one of sustained caution among industrial firms. A durable recovery would require the index to move back toward 50 and eventually return to positive territory above that threshold.
